Every child has a fair chance to succeed
Using the power of sport and mentoring to develop children and young people who lack access to opportunities; by improving their life skills and unlocking their potential for a successful future
In October 2022 I stood, ready to speak in front of a room of 400 guests at our incredible Dodgeball tournament, the largest and longest running annual gathering in our fundraising calendar – and promptly ripped up my speech.
I had the wind taken out of me by the film I had just seen, a young adult telling the story of what a Greenhouse Sports coach had meant to him. Nothing I could say could begin to add to the power and positivity of Mo’s story and how it demonstrates the truth of the value of the work our Coaches do.
2022 was our 20th anniversary and Mo is one of our extraordinary champion Alumni, the once children, now adults that are the living, working embodiment of ‘every child deserves a fair chance to succeed,’ and now readily give of their time to support us, promoting our cause. It was a compelling reminder of why the Greenhouse family is so passionate in our efforts to engage with as many young people as possible that fit our profile. It works. It sparks joy from the power of sport; it builds resilience, it unlocks self-belief, ability and it fires aspiration and a positive outlook.
And engage we must. The high watermark of those at the point of need is rising rapidly. The cost of living crisis is biting hard on the poorest and the 4 million children we recognised at the start of 2022 that deserve a Greenhouse Coach is a sadly redundant figure. Rising fuel and energy costs had pushed extreme poverty rates up by 30 per cent by the end of last year.*
Which is why as Chair of the Board of Trustees, introducing this review I’m filled with pride. Pride in the knowledge that in marking our 20th year we have a charity equipped and skilled to make a difference, successful in intervention, fantastically led by Beatrice and the team and focused on those in need and growing to meet the increasing challenges of our times.

This review reflects the first year of near to full operations for Greenhouse Sports following the restrictions of the pandemic receding into the background, and hopefully never to return. Having joined Greenhouse at the start of 2020, it has been my first experience of what we achieve and can achieve with all the ‘engines firing’.
And it is very pleasing to report that, in our 20th anniversary year, the young people, coaches, staff and supporters that make up the family that is Greenhouse Sports have really delivered against our vision that every child deserves a fair chance to succeed.
We have more coaching programmes operating than ever before, partnering with more schools and reaching more of the young people who really benefit from our focused mentoring approach. We’ve broadened our footprint, establishing regional coaching hubs in schools outside London for the first time, in Portsmouth and Leicester. Our Primary schools programme, which only started in 2021 has expanded to include six schools. In addition Greenhouse added a new sport to our coaching expertise, with a first full-time cricket programme with a new partner school in east London.
In 20 years Greenhouse Sports has garnered much learning In development of the sport for development intervention we deliver. In the spirit of innovation and evolution we were excited to launch a partnership with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation. The pioneering project with the Trust’s Impact on Urban Health initiative will develop a coaching model that brings schools, families, and community groups together to support young people’s mental health as they transition from primary to secondary school.
And it is our young people’s mental wellbeing that is an increasing concern, especially in the communities that we work with, following the destabilizing tide of the pandemic the cost of living crisis is hitting the families and children facing poverty hardest. Within this there is a hidden crisis for children making our work even more crucial. The rising levels of household stress and anxiety place a burden on the youngsters suffering reductions in opportunity and time for play that so many of us take for granted.
I want you, our inspirational supporters, to be assured that Greenhouse is meeting this challenge head on, as we present in the pages here. Our coaches continue to work hard to create a safe space where kids can be kids again, giving them the support they need to be able to cope at this time of crisis.
Without you, none of this is possible.
On behalf of everyone at Greenhouse Sports, thank you for your commitment to us and for being there for our young people.

“I really have no idea where I’d be without Coach – the answer to that scares me!
The hours I’ve put in is crazy – 6.30am starts, lunchtime, afterschool, weekends, holidays – it has changed my whole life from being lazy and not thinking about how I could improve to where I am now. My grades at school have shot up and thanks to the commitment I have shown to the programme I have been awarded a scholarship at a school in New York.”

Education is only effective when children can engage in learning. This generation has been penalised during the pandemic. These children matter and are the future of this country. They are not just another statistic.

A challenge to the charity and our community in Marylebone was the temporary closure of our community sports centre and activity hub, the Greenhouse Centre, at the end of 2021. Significant issues were discovered in the structure of the roof, rendering the Centre unsafe for any activity in the main hall. We were able to relocate as much of our coaching services as we could to alternative venues but have had to manage sessions for our youngsters at far lower capacity at these venues. Happily, the complex repair programme is underway with a view to being able to host activity in the Centre again later this year. It goes without saying we are completely committed to re-opening, to our community and the many young people and families on our doorstep.
The Greenhouse Centre has become a beacon for the local community, and this was heightened during the peak of the Covid pandemic, when, unable to provide coaching and activity, we operated as a foodbank. Investment in youth services continues to decline at a time when they are most needed. It is vital that young people and their families in North Westminster have a safe space to go, and to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. The Greenhouse Centre is unique in this part of London, open six days a week for the local community.
We were delighted to launch a partnership with the Sweaty Betty Foundation, supporting brand-new role within Greenhouse Sports to better understand the barriers for girls taking part in sport. The partnership will to provide a new directions and methods for delivering coaching that will engage more girls in taking part and feeling like sport and physical activity is for them. The Girls Participation Lead role will manage plans to engage more girls with Greenhouse Sports coaching, work towards our charity’s longer term goal of gender parity across our programmes.
Greenhouse Sports were proud to be named ING Bank’s UK Charity Partner for 2022 and 2023. As a national charity partner, we have benefited from company grants, staff fundraising, staff volunteering and incredible levels of interaction with their employees thanks to an engaged and passionate staff at ING.
Over the first year of our partnership, over 300 staff at ING have engaged with our work, directly providing opportunities and experiences for over 100 Greenhouse participants. This has included running sessions as part of our employability programme, supporting our coaches at after-school clubs and even partnering with one of our school partners to deliver a bespoke in-office programme of workshops to provide young people with opportunities and access to the financial sector.
Not only have the staff at ING supported our work through volunteering and providing career development opportunities for our young people but they have carried out a number of fantastic staff fundraising events and challenges including the likes of dragonboat racing, comedy nights, sports evenings, quiz nights, bake sales, cycles, runs and much more!
We thank all of our funding partner organisations for the fantastic support you give our young people. We welcome anyone who wants their corporation to get involved with Greenhouse Sports to contact our Head of Partnerships, James Steven.
Through 2021 and 2022 we’re excited to have worked with Sure as a UK partner of their Sure Breaking Limits Programme, educating our young people through workshops on inclusion, anti-racism, LGBTQ+ inclusion, as well as equipping them with leadership skills, supported by members of Diversity dance troupe, Nathan Ramsey and Warren Russell. Watch the highlights from the session here!
Run for the Roof saw Jamie Peacock, Simon Dent, Sam Rents and Chris Williams team up with friends to complete a 100 mile Ultramarathon around London in 24 hours to raise money for the Greenhouse Centre roof repairs – hats off to all who took part and completed this incredible feat.
Our 15th annual Dodgeball Tournament in October saw 24 teams from across the City descend on Lord’s Cricket Ground. It was as energetic, fun and (healthily) competitive as ever! Thanks to the generosity of every team over £500,000 was raised, empowering thousands of young people to keep engaged with their education, achieve better results and better futures. Congratulations to our 2022 Champions Bloomberg, shield winners Citibank and winners of the Fair Play award J.P. Morgan!
We were fortunate to receive great support from our amazing ambassadors this year, with a unique event that saw tennis legends Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman, Katie Boulter, Anne Keothavong, and Jamie Delgado deliver our first ever ProAm Tennis Tournament.
Greenhouse teamed up with Adidas Runners London during the summer holidays, where AR London provided a unique summer camp day for four of our London schools at Battersea Park Millennium Arena.
